Clovis Blackwell is an Artist and Professor who explores suffering, perseverance, and transformation through multiple original artworks, serigraph prints, and cast sculptures. I visited his home studio in his quaint basement to document his process and hear about his work. We chatted for a while while he gave me a tour and explained his process, during our session he was preparing for an upcoming show and printing 4x6 screen prints to be used as mailers and promotional material for his work. The prints that he was making implemented inverting, reflecting and warping images of mushroom clouds and flowers to contrast the beauty and destruction of the two. When both are manipulated they can begin to create a unique layered image. When flipped and inverted, a mushroom cloud begins to resemble a beautiful flower and you begin to see this transformation from suffering to beauty. It was a unique and therapeutic process to watch him work in this tight and intimate space.
